Why magnetic Island? There are many compelling reasons why Ergon Energy chose Magnetic Island as the site for the leading-edge Solar Suburb initiative. With its stunning natural surroundings, it’s no surprise that many Magnetic Islanders are supportive of initiatives that seek to protect our environment. Through this community support, Magnetic Island is spreading the word about using energy wisely and we invite you to join us for the journey. top ten energy saving tips 1 Set your air conditioner at 25oC in summer. If you leave your accommodation or home, even for a short time, it’s always more energy efficient to turn your air conditioner off. 2 If you don’t already have insulation in your ceiling or under your roof, installing it will increase your comfort and lower your electricity bills. Painting your roof white or a light colour will also help considerably. 3 If you’re not using a light or appliance, please turn it off. 4 To reduce load on the electricity network at peak demand times (between 6pm and 9pm, especially during holiday periods), consider using washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, pool pumps, etc. outside these times. 5 Old fridges use a considerable amount of electricity. Where possible, consolidate items into newer fridges and turn old ones off. Call our Solar City team on 4758 1674 and we can collect unwanted fridges. 6 Change traditional incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent lights, even in areas not used often. Each one changed over saves money and greenhouse gases. 7 When buying a new appliance, check its star or energy rating (where relevant). The more stars, the more energy efficient the appliance. 8 Clean the filters in your air conditioners regularly so they can work more efficiently. 9 Call Ergon Energy or your retailer and ask if economy tariff options are suitable for your water heater and other appliances. 10 During your energy assessment, why not let us install a water-saving shower head to cut hot water usage while maintaining water pressure. Shower for four minutes or less. we all play a part... overview There’s a transformation underway at Magnetic Island. It’s powerful and will change the way we think about and use energy – now and into the future. 2,500 Magnetic Island residents and businesses are showing the world how simple changes to the way we live, work and play can chart a course for sustainable living that everyone can follow. No longer can we ignore the impact of our carbon footprint and on Magnetic Island, we are working hard to show that one small island can make a big difference. Ergon Energy’s Magnetic Island Solar Suburb project forms part of the Australian Government’s $94 million visionary Solar Cities program. Through a range of initiatives, the project aims to lower energy use and reduce carbon emissions by more than 50,000 tonnes over seven years. Through this initiative, the Solar City team will work with residents, businesses and property owners to show how solar power, smart meters, energy efficiency and new electricity pricing options can meet energy needs while minimising harm to our environment.
