A small island making a big difference VISIT the Solar City Smart Lifestyle Centre on the way to Horseshoe Bay • energy saving ideas • local advice • see the NEW Solar Park Did you know? All our combined efforts are paying off. After an energy assessment, residents use 8% less electricity even 12 months later. One in five people who save, reduce their electricity consumption by 30% or more. Electricity consumption for the whole island is now 24% lower than where it was predicted to be before the project started. Seasonal peak demand (those days when the most electricity is used for the whole year) has been falling each year and is now 22% lower than where it was predicted to be in 2010. This smaller carbon footprint has saved almost 20,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere and the planned third undersea power cable to the island has been deferrred by at least seven years, helping to protect the island’s world heritage environment. Keep up the good work in 2011 Would you like to be paid for the energy you don’t use? If you live in your home and think that you have used at least 20% less electricity in any quarter this year compared to last year, you may be eligible for a payment under the 20+10 Incentive. Almost 600 residents were eligible for this incentive in at least one quarter in 2010. Have you moved recently? Are you new to the island? If you recently moved to Maggie or changed your address on the island after 1 January 2011, you are eligible for a free Solar City energy assessment at your new home. The opportunity to have a Solar City energy assessment ended for most residents already living on the island on 31 December 2010. But we recognise every home is different so if you have moved we’re happy to call in and discuss how you can continue to save energy at your new address. Want to generate clean energy for Magnetic Island? Many residents and businesses on the island are hosting solar photovoltaic panels that provide clean, green energy for everyone on the island to enjoy. To find out how you can contribute and if your house, garage, shed or other fixed structure is suitable, please contact us. we all play a part... Keeping Maggie Beautiful For three years now Magnetic Island has been transforming into a Solar Suburb and together we have been changing the way we think about and use energy. Three out of four Maggie residents, two out of three island business operators and countless visitors are participating in the Solar City project and helping to keep Magnetic Island beautiful. Free energy assessments, upgrading homes, buildings and appliances or simply changing behaviour – like turning off lights and air conditioners when not in the room – is all making a difference. awards Visit the Smart lifestyle Centre to discover ways to save money on your electricity bill, get assistance claiming incentives you may be eligible for, learn more about renewable energy and its uses. You can also see interactive energy saving displays and the new Solar Park which will be complete around Easter 2011. We are open from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
